Drama

Montessorians recognize that children, from toddlers to teenagers, learn and express themselves in a very individual way. Music, art, storytelling, movement, and drama are part of every Montessori program. But there are other things particular to the Montessori environment which encourages creative development: many materials which stimulate interest and involvement; an emphasis on the sensory aspect of experience; and the opportunity for both verbal and nonverbal modes of learning

Our Drama Program is designed to encourage, develop, and strengthen the self-confidence and caring nature of our students. To speak, perform, or stand in front of an audience and/or peers takes an unbelievable amount of courage. With the support and encouragement of friends and teachers this is possible. Public speaking is a large part of an educational future, and we feel it is important to prepare our students to feel comfortable and confident in this role.

Role playing is a key component of our drama curriculum. Evoking the imagination of a student by role playing can help children empathize and sympathize with a variety of opinions and thus better understand human nature. By expressing themselves in a healthy, fun, and supportive environment, students are able to gain confidence in a job well done - the strength of applause is surprising!

Our teachers help the children act confidently and speak clearly. The curriculum includes speech, creative movement, structured improvisations, snippets, and mini-scripts. New lessons are taught each week throughout the school year.

Language and drama are important elements of our curriculum. Children prepare a short drama productions and present it to their parents. They collaborate on "writing" an original script. Through these drama activities, children learn cooperation while building imagination, reading, writing, and speech skills.
